Get Your Goals Right…

Welcome, friends, to the most anticipated New Year in modern history. Never before in your life has society craved a fresh beginning this much. Never before have we seen so much optimism packed in a simple reboot of the calendar.

However, you and I know that changing our year’s last digit to a 1 doesn’t actually change anything. This is the same world, with the same issues we faced when the year ended with a zero.

Why do I bring this up? Not so we can dwell on 2020, but to learn from it for one simple purpose:

So you can understand why you’re going to fail at the resolutions and goals that you just set.

Yes. Let’s just be honest with ourselves and recognize that approx. 98% of people reading this already cheated on their new diet, skipped that early-morning jog, or overspent their Amazon budget. In whatever way you can get off-track or fail at your unique resolution, the vast majority of us have stumbled. And we’re only a few weeks into 2021…

But you don’t need to feel bad about it! The way I see, it’s not your fault. It’s the fault of the process. And a process can easily be fixed.

As you probably know firsthand, the typical goal-setting process consists of composing a list of dreamy, pie-in-the-sky future outcomes.

This isn’t an effective formula for lasting change. Instead, it destines most of our resolutions to fail.

Big time.

Results come from how we think and how we behave each day. This boils down to your habits and schedule.

Until we recognize that our current habits don’t align with our desired outcomes, our most daunting goals will continue to elude us. If I were to audit your behavior on an hourly basis, the data would suggest that – just like the transition from 2020 to 2021 – you are the same you.

So, rather than just stating how your results will be different, document how your actions, perceptions, and beliefs will change – to become the person who can accomplish your ambitious goals.

As Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” And if last year taught us anything, it’s that life will, in fact, punch you in the mouth from time to time.

In closing, I challenge you to not think solely about the goals and final outcomes you wish to achieve but instead focus the process in which you’ll use to get there. The Resources below will help in that mindset shift…

It’s more likely that this time next year you’ll be doing the same thing than performing a new habit with ease. Why is that? And is there anything you can do to make change easier? Link.

You don’t have to be a multinational corporation to benefit from OKRs. This data-driven framework is equally powerful for setting personal goals too. In short, it’s a system for making sure what you want to happen, happens. Link.

Be. Do. Have.  First we “be” what we want, then we start “doing” things from this state of being – and soon we discover that what we’re doing winds up bringing us the things we’ve always wanted to “have.” Link.
